Verde Valley Railroad

We purchased tickets to ride the Verde Valley Railroad today.  The train didn't leave until 1, but we were supposed to be there by noon to pick up our tickets.  We got there right at noon and couldn't believe how many people were already there.

We picked up our tickets and joined everyone else out in the shaded waiting area.  We met a couple from Pennsylvania and chatted with them until it was time to leave.

It was time to board so we headed to our car, The Wickenburg.

The train whistle blew and off we went.  There was narration throughout the trip describing the history and landmarks we passed.

We began our journey into the red walled canyon.

The rock walls were massive as the train wound through them.

As we journeyed through the canyon, we enjoyed a buffet of wings, salad, vegetables, and fried brownies.  We also each ordered a prickly pear lemonade that was just as good as it was beautiful.

We continued winding through the canyon,

the train hugging along the mountain edge.

We arrived at the halfway point in about 2 hours.  The train stopped while the engines went around and reconnected on the other side and we were off again.

There is also an outside train where we probably spent half our time admiring the views.

We went back the same way we came, but it always looks different looking at the landscape the other way.

It was a wonderful afternoon!
