Homer, Alaska

After we left Telkeetna, our next destination was Anchorage.  It was strange being in a town so large. Anchorage has approximately 300,000 people so it was nice to see Target, Costco, Kohl's and all the other big stores.  We only went to Costco and Fred Meyer's to restock, but it was nice to know the other stores were available.

We spent one night parked at the Moose Lodge and left the next morning for the Kenai Peninsula.

They say Alaska is 30 minutes from Anchorage and I don't think we were more than 20 minutes before we started seeing these sights.

The fireweed is everywhere and is absolutely gorgeous!

Our destination was Homer, Alaska.  We rounded the peninsula on our way to Homer and Mt. Redoubt came into view. Mt. Redoubt is an active volcano which last erupted in 2009.

Next was Mt. Ilianna, another active volcano. We followed these views all the way to

Homer.

We are staying at Baycrest RV Park and have probably the most spectacular views we have ever had at a campground in our five years of fulltiming.

Yes, this is our view from the front window!

Here's the rv park taken from an overlook.  It is on a bluff 300 feet above the ocean and that is Mt. Iliamna in the background. Our motorhome is the first one on the left after that little clearing of trees.

Another small world moment.  We had made new friends with Ray and Cheryl in Fairbanks.  When we arrived at Baycrest, I had checked on Facebook and saw they were in Homer.  I compared their Facebook picture and realized they were in this rv park and when I looked out my side window, there was their motorhome, about five doors down.  We sat outside and talked for awhile, then went to the Spit for dinner at Captain Pattie's.   Unfortunately, they were leaving the next day, but we were so glad we got to spend some more time with them!

A view of the Homer Spit from the overlook.  The sun was shining down on it.  It's about 10 p.m. here.

Homer harbor

Eagles are everywhere.  This is a nest on the road leading down to the Homer Spit.

In Anchor Point, fishing boats are launched a different way.  This tractor takes the boat out to the water on the trailer.

Then, when the boat comes in, the tractor pulls the trailer back into the water and the boat drives up on it.

It's pretty neat to watch!

Our campground view about midnight.  It is dark now for 2-3 hours, but it is still pretty light here at midnight.  That is the moon coming up over the water.

Next up, our wildlife cruise to Seldovia!
