Segway Tour At Garden of the Gods

Friday, Lisa and Karli left.  We had a wonderful time and we were sad to see them leave, but knew they had to return to Austin.  They made it back safely arriving home on Saturday.

We were moving Friday as well.  We were only going 45 miles, but preparations still had to be made.  We arrived in Monument about 11:00.  It is about 20 miles north of Colorado Springs.  We are staying at Colorado Heights RV Park. We're pretty close to each other here, but we are high on a hill with Pike's Peak in the background.

Taking the dogs on their walk, we can go on a nature trail above the park with this view.

This is our view from our steps outside.  So, it's not all bad.

Monday, we had Segway tours scheduled at the Garden of the Gods.  It was the last Group On we needed to do before leaving Colorado.  We had bought it right before the fires and were not sure if we would be able to do it, but we did.

We arrived at the Visitor's Center and were given the introduction and training for riding the Segways.

We had ridden on Segways before in Austin, but it was different here, much steeper and off course, a much higher elevation (that will come into play later on).

Here we are at the Kissing Camel Rock.

and that's Grey Rock behind us.

After this picture was taken, we took off again and as we were riding, I began to feel lightheaded and nauseous.  I knew I needed some water, but didn't have any.  I figured it was only about 5 or 10 minutes before we got back to the Visitor's Center and I could shake it off.  I kept riding and didn't say anything to anybody (which was really stupid on my part).  All of a sudden, the next thing I knew I had fallen about 8 feet off the road.  All we can figure out was that I blacked out and missed the curve on the road.  I don't even remember that split second of falling, I just remember being on the ground and thinking, I don't hurt, I must be all right.  I got up, our guide had run down to help me.  I sat on the rock next to me and the guide got me a bottle of water.  After drinking it, I was fine.  We think it was the altitude and lack of water.  I thought that after 4 weeks, it wouldn't affect me, but it's all we can think caused it.  Thank goodness, my only injury was a scraped elbow.  It could have been much, much worse.

We got back on our Segways and finished the trip.  We don't know if I'm going to be charged for any damage on the Segway, but I would rather pay for that than having to be repaired myself.

We had planned to drive up to Pike's Peak afterwards, but the rain clouds were around it, so we made a Costco run and returned home.

It was certainly an adventurous day, just glad everything turned out all right.

  1. OMG, we're happy you're okay. Something for us to keep in mind when we're hiking at high altitudes in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.
