California Here We Come

We broke one of our travel rules today and left on a Sunday which wasn't a real smart thing to do. We were on the interstate connecting Las Vegas and Los Angeles and there was a lot of traffic. We wanted to go to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, but also wanted to be at Yosemite before Memorial Day weekend, so leaving on Sunday would give us three days at Sequoia NP.

We continued our journey through the desert arriving in Boron, California about 2:30.

We got our site at the Arabian Oasis RV Park using our Passport America discount. Our site was nice and level, we didn't have to unhook the truck.

We headed over to the Borax Visitors Center which was about three miles away.

We grew up watching Death Valley Days always seeing the commercials about 20 Mule Team Borax. It was interesting to see where it is mined.

Here is a picture of the complete facility.

Here is what it looks like right after it is mined and before it is crushed.

There was also an exhibit of everything borax is used in its manufacturing.

We went outside to look at the 20 mule team life size exhibit. Mule teams were used to haul out the borax before trains and trucks.

It was an interesting place to spend a couple of hours. Tomorrow, we head to Three Rivers to explore Sequoia and Kings Canyon NationalParks. We have never been to these parks so we are looking forward to seeing them.

Location:Boron, California
